Randy Archibald, PA with Marathon Health and Making a Difference Foundation Board Member, volunteered and co-lead a medical mission trip in September 2024 in Cusco, Peru. He shared his thoughts from his week in clinic and why every medical provider should experience a medical mission. Thank you Randy!
“I recently had the opportunity to participate in a one-week medical mission in Cusco, Peru, and I was reminded of the profound impact medical missions can have, not only on the communities served but also on the medical providers themselves. Participating in a medical mission is a unique opportunity to serve others, educate patients, and reconnect with the core reasons many of us chose to enter the medical field in the first place. It is a chance to make patients feel truly heard, help them improve their health, and provide peace of mind.
In Cusco and the surrounding communities, our team provided care to more than 800 Peruvians from underserved populations, addressing a wide range of health issues including musculoskeletal complaints, gastrointestinal conditions, and skin conditions. We treated what we could with the medications and supplies transported from the US in our luggage, and where medications were not available, educated patients on how to treat the condition using available resources. In contrast to typical medical encounters dominated by keystrokes and mouse clicks, on medical missions you’ll care for patients with your knowledge, experience and heart.
Medical missions are filled with numerous challenges and profound rewards. The clinical the days are long and demanding, as we treat patients with limited resources, all while navigating an unfamiliar culture, language, and foods. Despite these obstacles, each challenge enriched our experience, creating unique memories and strengthening our friendships. The kind words of appreciation and smiles of the people we cared for definitely made up for any difficulty we faced. I’ll never forget how the sweet little Peruvian ladies called me “papa,” “papito,” and “papi” as a term of endearment and respect.
By participating in a medical mission, providers can reignite their passion for medicine, gain new perspectives, and foster a deeper appreciation for the privilege of caring for others. These missions not only enhance our professional skills but also enrich our personal lives, reminding us of the profound difference we can make in the world. Expect to have experiences and develop friendships that you will never forget.
