About Ouelessebougou Alliance: OA is a Utah-based NGO that has worked in partnership with local villages to transform the quality of life in the Ouelessbougou region of Mali, West Africa since 1986. The Alliance partners with 25 villages to deliver sustainable programs in health and education.

About Mali: Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world, and most people lack adequate access to primary healthcare. The women in particular are affected by poor sanitation, disease, sexual abuse, and child marriage. Mali is twice the size of Texas. Ouelessebougou, in the southern region, is a small town of roughly 50,000 people. Mali was colonized by France in the 19th century but gained its independence in the 1960’s.

About the clinic site: The medical mission will take place at the Ouelessebougou Regional Hospital. The Hospital was built only a few years ago and is within walking distance of the OA compound.

Type of accommodation: You will be staying in a simpler, safe compound in the heart of Ouelessebougou. Accommodations are rustic, and at times, bathroom facilities and running water may be limited. You will have your own cot, but will be sharing a room with 4 to 5 other people, in addition to sharing the bathroom and shower facilities. All beds have their own mosquito nets. There is overnight security at the compound.

Practice: This medical mission’s focus will be on surgically repairing fistulas and prolapsed uteruses. You will be performing multiple surgeries per day. You may encounter pregnant women and others with conditions we have not planned for, who are interested in seeing an American doctor for free.
