La Ceiba, Honduras
Date: May 3-10, 2020

Specialties Needed: 1 Emergency Medicine, 1 Pediatrics, 1 OB-GYN
About Honduras: La Ceiba is a coastal city in northern Honduras. The islands off the coast are part of a vast barrier reef where visitors can snorkel and dive to see unique marine life like whale sharks. Outside of the city is Pico Bonito National Park, home of jaguars and toucans, and Cuero y Salado Wildlife refuge that is home to mangroves and manatees. The area is a tropical rainforest climate, staying hot and humid throughout the year. La Ceiba is the third largest city in the country.
About the Mission: Honduras is a country with extreme poverty. Healthcare is almost nonexistent in rural areas of the country. Malaria, dengue, chikungunya are highly prevalent diseases in this area. Skin rashes, infections, respiratory infections, influenza, heart-worm and diarrhea are all common based on lack of clean water and sanitation in the area. Healthcare professionals will be able to address these issues with patient care and health education.
A Broader View partners with the regional hospital in La Ceiba, the local Bomberos ambulance service, and several small clinics around the city. The hospital is critically understaffed and appreciates volunteers coming in to offer assistance. Most of the activities on this trip center around health education of basic hygiene and healthy living practices, and women’s health. Practitioners may also be asked to go on rounds with the hospital staff, assist in the ER with triage, or be on a health brigade going out to local communities. Volunteers will be working 4-8 hours per day, and will experience snorkeling beautiful coral reefs off the Cayos Cochinos islands at the end of the trip.
