At the Making a Difference Foundation, we are driven to provide opportunities for CHG employees and healthcare providers to find their passion in making positive changes in the world. One of the ways we do this is to provide financial grants to support local charities that CHG employees are involved in. For the past few years we donated to the Cancer Wellness House on behalf of Shilo Jackson, an Associate QM Manager at CHG and founder of the Conquering Cancer Employee Network Group.
Shilo Jackson, a CHG employee, has been an active volunteer at the Cancer Wellness House for over 10 years. She was first introduced to this nonprofit by a friend who lost her dad to cancer. The friend recommended the house because at that time Shilo’s nine-year-old son was undergoing extensive cancer treatments. As a nurse, Shilo was trained to treat the whole person, not just physical problems. And that is why she fell in love with the Cancer Wellness House, they place as much importance on the emotional and spiritual well-being of a patient as well as supporting their physical health.
The Cancer Wellness House, located in Salt Lake City, has provided integrative care for over twenty-three years. Integrative care brings complementary and alternative medicine into mainstream cancer care to provide a holistic healing process for patients and their families. Their mission is to fill the significant gap for patients between receiving the conventional cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, and the delivery of more holistic approaches to care. Their campus is a warm, home-like setting, with landscaped gardens, that create a healing sanctuary for all individuals affected by cancer. Some of their many programs include yoga, massage, acupuncture, nutrition, medication, child and family therapy, support groups and community events.
Shilo and her family almost lost her son three times due to complications from chemotherapy. The Cancer Wellness House was with them every step of the way. And now Shilo continues to give back to help families who face the same struggles dealing with a family member undergoing cancer treatments.
